Chapter 7

I waited outside for Tessa’s Jeep. Not far away, a thunderstorm rippled with lightning and thunder. I hoped we could beat the storm. The wind riffled through my hair. My leg didn’t itch quite so much, so I didn’t scratch. That was the old wives’ advice. Don’t scratch. That would only make things worse. Of course, if those old wives had had a good spell, they wouldn’t have bothered with bad advice. I felt tired. The lack of sleep was telling, but it wasn’t just the sleep. I didn’t feel as magical as usual, if that was the way to describe it. Witches were like people. Their magical powers waxed and waned, and they could tell the difference. My powers were waning, and I didn’t know why. I wasn’t worried. They would soon power up again. That was the way of the world.

The Jeep raced up and skidded to a stop. While I shared Tessa’s concern for the girls, speeding dangerously didn’t seem like a good solution.

“It’s night, and it will soon storm,” I said I as climbed into the Jeep. “Speeding won’t save us that much time, and it could make matters worse.”

“When did you become my mother?” Tessa asked. “But you’re right. We won’t speed recklessly. We’ll just speed.”

With that, the Jeep leaped forward, and I quickly clicked my safety belt. “What is the problem?” I asked.

“I’m not sure,” Tessa answered. “The girls went out to talk to the Otter King. It seems he has some rather unique views on vampires and witches. I won’t go into them, but let’s say, he likes witches better than vampires.”

“Who doesn’t?”

“Exactly. Anyway, something happened, and they got scared.”

“Wasn’t the Otter King there to protect them?”

“He was, but he doesn’t fit in Genevive’s car. Without him, they didn’t want to try it.”

“They couldn’t call before midnight?”

Tessa laughed. “I have the feeling they had something secret to do. Allie told me she was staying with Genevive, and I’m guessing Genevive told her father that she was staying with us. You know, the old I’ll-call-your-mom-if-you-call-mine.”

“I could just choke them,” I said. “And you know I don’t mean that. It’s just that I feel very tired, and I need sleep.”

“Me too. I can’t get my brain past the equinox. We have a command performance, and I don’t feel all that magical. Too much worry, I suppose.”

“Stress,” I said. “If the stupid stressweed comes back, I’m going to pull out my hair.”

“Which really shows a lack of stress,” Tessa teased.

We laughed together, a proven stress reliever.

We found the girls at the edge of the lake, the Otter King a few feet away. One look at us, and they both started talking at once. I let Tessa stop them, as I didn’t have the energy.

“Okay,” Tessa said and held up her hand. “Who wants to go first? Because I can’t listen to both of you at the same time.”

They looked at each other.

“I’ll go,” Genevive said. “It was my idea to come out here and talk to the Otter King.
